Bending acrylic offers a wide range of possibilities, and the heat applied to the material causes it to soften without discoloration. Acrylic is as clear as glass, and they are used in a variety of applications.
Depending on the need, you can bend flat acrylic sheets or create curves without any professional help. Think of it as a DIY project. You will need several pieces of equipment to facilitate this task.
Cut the acrylic sheet to the desired size using a score and snap method or a saw, ensuring that the edges are clean and straight. If you use a thicker acrylic sheet, you have to be more careful when handling it.
You need a heat source suitable for use in a small area. Some simple tools like a heat gun, a small butane torch, and an embossing tool can serve as the best heat source. You can choose one of them based on their availability.
Quick release wand clamps are preferred for secure hold. However, you can also use replacement jigs that can accommodate scrap strip wood bending jigs.
Working with thermoplastics is risky. When handling hot plastics, keep away from flammable materials and have good ventilation. Use oven mitts or welding gloves and glasses to prevent accidents.
Use a ruler to check that your workpiece is clamped between scrap wood.
Note: Some colored organic glass plates are resistant to high temperatures. Therefore, they are heat-resistant and you cannot bend or warp them by applying heat. It's best to avoid them.
To make this jig, you will need a piece of wood. The edges of the wood should be straight and at least ⅛ inch thick. Make sure it is wide enough for the work piece.

First, remove the protective film from the material you want to bend or curve. Then, use a long, thin test stroke about 1 inch thick to practice the technique and get a feel for how the heat affects your workpiece before trying it for real.
Place the workpiece on a heat-safe work surface. Now, place a strip of wood over your plastic, about 1/4 inch where you want the curve to be. This determines the thickness of the plastic to some extent, as thicker plastic requires a wider radius curve.
With the help of a ruler, check that your acrylic sheet is clamped securely underneath the wood strip clamps. The wooden strips prevent the acrylic sheet from coming into contact with heat.
Place the long end of the plastic strip where it can easily be pushed up with a gloved hand, as the long end of the plastic strip bends much more easily than the short end.
Heat the acrylic sheet evenly in a line in front of the straight edge of your fixture. Pass your heat source to an even, slow speed along the plastic line in front of the clamp. Make sure the heat source is far enough away to prevent scorching your wood clamps.
Gently press the acrylic sheet while applying heat along the curved lines. There will be a stage when the material rises easily, like it reaches a molten state. You will be able to feel the bend points evenly along the full width of the strip you are bending. It shouldn't be soft on one side and hard on the other.
When you feel your acrylic sheets can be pushed upward, remove the heat source. Now hold the acrylic sheet evenly with both hands and push upward, gently bending it over the clamp lines. You have to press evenly with both hands or your material will twist slightly when bending.
When you get the acrylic sheet at the right angle or curve you want (no more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit for windows or curved bread boxes), gently place the plexiglass in the palace until it's established again. Allow the acrylic sheet to cool while it is still clamped to the clamp.
When bending acrylic sheets, kinks, unevenness, and being too far away from the clamps can sometimes occur. So it's not straight and square with the end of the material. Problems arise when the heat source is not close enough to the clamp, and when the material is bent across the entire width of the acrylic sheet before the material softens evenly.
You have to wait for that moment when you feel the acrylic sheet is soft and allows you to push. Then, as you push up on the material, you'll feel it start to move around your hand, and then it'll move quickly.
The free point where the material can move quickly is when you want to shape it on a jig. If you try to force it to bend before it has softened evenly, you will not get a satisfactory result and the bend will be uneven.
When you try to bend acrylic before it softens evenly along the width, it won't bend quite evenly along the line of the clamp. This results in an angled bend rather than a straight bend. Twist bending occurs when the material on one side of the strip is not ready to bend and the other side is softened. For this reason, ensure even heating along the width.
Acrylic can be bent with heat without discoloring the material. However, if you don't heat the curved lines of your acrylic sheet properly, you may create air bubbles or permanent scorch marks that cannot be removed.
Therefore, do not bring the heat source too close to the workpiece. If you sing wood on a jig, you're too close. If you notice bubbles or scorch marks in your test turns, move your heat source along the turn line faster, or keep it farther away from the turn line.
NOTE: The distance and speed of the heat source along the bend line will vary depending on the thickness of the material.
