What thickness of plastic is right for your project?

When you start a DIY project with plastic sheets, it can be difficult to know which thickness is best for the task at hand. Sometimes, there is a simple solution. For example, if you are replacing a broken window in a conservatory, you can simply measure the thickness of the existing glass and you will know it is accurate. But if you are starting from scratch, the answer is not always so simple.

Indoor projects

Polycarbonate sheet is a very suitable material for indoor projects because it is lightweight and easy to work with, especially for DIY enthusiasts. For example, if you want to install a tabletop cover or check a drawer unit to protect them from scratches and damage, a 2mm thick plastic sheet will perfectly meet your needs. However, if you want to remove the cover every time you eat at the table, or remove it regularly for cleaning, you may want to consider a 3mm or even 4mm thickness to make it sturdier and suitable for frequent moving and lifting from furniture.

If you decide to add some floating shelves to your home, acrylic is a great modern choice. We offer clear acrylic in 20mm to 30mm thicknesses which are perfect for projects like this - properly supported on the wall, it's a great addition to any home. Acrylic is also a great material for a kitchen or bathroom splashback as it's easy to keep clean and hygienic, and is durable. We recommend using a 5mm thickness for kitchen splashbacks as the adhesive may show through some of the colour in a 3mm thick sheet, ruining the look.

As a general rule, 2mm thick sheets can be used for any application that can't lie completely flat, such as unframed shed windows and slightly curved applications. In this case, a slight curve can be used to add rigidity.

Garden Furniture

Want to add some acrylic elements to your garden? Acrylic plastic is great for outdoor use as it's weather resistant and can easily withstand knocks and scratches. It's also shatterproof and impact resistant, so if you have young children or pets, you can rest assured that they'll be safe.

When you buy clear acrylic sheets for your garden, you need to think about what you're going to be putting on the acrylic, and then decide on the thickness you need. Will it be plates and glasses, or heavier items, and how well they'll be supported? If there is a lot of support underneath the acrylic, for example a tabletop cut to size sitting on a solid base, then you can opt for a thinner sheet – although we still recommend a thickness of at least 5mm – whereas if there is very little support, we recommend you go for a thickness of at least 8mm to ensure it remains stable.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is softer than acrylic, so is less scratch-resistant and more likely to become cloudy over time. However, it is 20 times more impact-resistant than acrylic, so it’s worth bearing this in mind when choosing between the two for your project. If you’re using polycarbonate, we recommend a minimum thickness of 3mm for applications such as replacing shed windows to provide adequate security. If you’re replacing or installing greenhouse glazing, you might want to opt for 4mm. We often have customers buy polycarbonate as a roof for a gazebo, in which case the question of support comes up again. If the plastic is well supported, a thickness of 5mm will be sufficient, whereas if there isn’t as much support to provide you with the strength you need for the gazebo to be safe, you might want to consider a thicker sheet.

When you’re considering which thickness to order, always keep the size of the acrylic in mind. If the size is smaller, thinner acrylics are generally relatively strong and may be sufficient. However, if you are purchasing a larger sheet, you will need to ensure that there is adequate support, and this amount of support will directly affect the thickness you require. Although acrylic is strong, it still requires support when used in large sheets, so if the size is larger, choose a thicker sheet. For example, if the sheet area is up to 1.5 square meters, 3mm will be sufficient, while anything between 1.5 and 2 square meters should be at least 4mm thick.
