GLASS OR ACRYLIC AQUARIUM?

One of the most common questions we get from customers and aquarium enthusiasts is “Which aquarium is better? Glass or acrylic? What’s the difference?” After spending so many years around glass and acrylic aquariums, My suggestion is to change the question a little and ask yourself: "Which aquarium is better for me?" In this article, we will detail some of the pros and cons of each so that you can decide which aquarium is best for you pavilion.

Glass fish tank

Let’s start with the basics, a glass fish tank is simply a glass plate held together with silicone. As far as I know, this is the only way to build a glass aquarium. In most cases, silicone is either clear or black, and there are no quality or structural considerations here - just visual ones. The base of most aquariums is tempered glass for added strength, with the remaining panels being flat glass. You'll also encounter two types of glass: regular glass and low-iron glass. Low-iron glass is made from a different type of sand and contains less iron, making the panels clearer and without the green and blue tints that regular glass has. Glass has poor insulating properties, which may be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the room temperature you want to achieve and the temperature of your aquarium.

Good news:

(1)In almost all cases, glass will be cheaper than acrylic. Very large glass jars are just as expensive as acrylic jars, but glass is generally not a good choice in these oversized containers, which we'll discuss in the next paragraph.

(2) Glass is not scratch-resistant, which is a fair consideration when choosing a fish tank. I've had them a few times before, and now working with them, I can safely say that they can withstand a lot of friction without scratching, but they can still scratch if abused with sharp objects and enough pressure.

Bad news:

(1)Glass is heavier than acrylic - as much as 10 times heavier!

In most cases this is not a problem, especially when dealing with smaller sizes - the aquarium is not too heavy to transport and the floor it sits on can safely withstand it weight. Weight can be a consideration when dealing with large tanks, especially if the foundation is raised, and the weight can cause the floor to sink or worse - this can also be overcome by reinforcing the floor. Transporting and placing large glass jars can be more challenging, but can be overcome with the proper equipment and/or number of moving personnel.

(2) Glass will break

- To be completely fair, this is unlikely, but must be mentioned. The aquarium can crack if you accidentally drop a rock onto the glass pane, or if something heavy moving around the aquarium hits it - this is unlikely to happen, but it's important to note and remember .

(3) The seams are not strong

- As we mentioned at the beginning, the aquarium is held together with silicone seams. Again, to be fair, if you purchase an aquarium from a reputable company, your aquarium will likely last you many years. However, we receive a number of calls every year asking us to repair leaking seams - this is especially troublesome if the aquarium is built into a wall or in custom cabinetry. Last year we received a call about a 250g leaking glass fish tank that had been custom mounted to the wall with custom cabinetry above. Over time, a pinhole-sized hole appeared, the aquarium had to be drained, the animals were transported to terrariums, the sand was removed, cabinets were dismantled, walls were broken, and the aquarium was shipped to the manufacturer Making repairs – this must be a nightmare. Another issue we have to consider in Southern California is the potential for earthquakes. Even small vibrations can damage seams or cause cracks in bulkhead holes.

Acrylic aquarium

The most basic… Acrylic aquariums are made from clear thermoplastic (aka sheets of acrylic or Plexiglas). It's important to understand that the acrylic panels in a fish tank are not glued - they are glued. The water-thin acrylic cement softens the plastic surfaces and makes them blend together. These materials are intertwined and become one. The thickness of the aquarium panel will vary depending on size and height, but regardless of material thickness, the view of the aquarium monitor will remain clear and undistorted. Acrylic is easy to drill and cut into many different shapes, which is more challenging with glass. Acrylic has more insulating capabilities, which can be a benefit or disadvantage depending on the room temperature and aquarium temperature you are trying to achieve.

Good news:

(1) Higher clarity

- the light transmittance of acrylic is as high as 93%, while the light transmittance of glass is about 82%. This advantage of acrylic clarity allows for a more natural display and an overall better viewing experience. I remember after clearing algae from my own acrylic fish tank panel, I looked at it and forgot there was anything between me and the fish.

(2) More durable

– Acrylic aquariums are much more durable than glass aquariums. The material is shatter-resistant, and unlike glass, acrylic sheets are welded together into one piece. In my opinion, this is a huge advantage, especially when building an aquarium for someone else and we are responsible for any potential problems. As mentioned in the glass section above, earthquakes are an important consideration for many people, and having an acrylic aquarium can help most people sleep better at night.

(3) Easy to modify

- Acrylic can be easily drilled and cut to make not only aquariums, but also sinks and overflows. It's great for DIY projects and can be made using simple tools. I remember I had to seal an extra hole in the bottom panel, it was very easy to just solder a 1/2″ piece of acrylic over the hole to create a patch repair.

(4) Light weight

- Acrylic aquariums are much lighter than glass aquariums, making them easier and cheaper to transport and place in a home or business. Acrylic's lighter weight can also help you avoid the need for any floor reinforcements in large aquariums.

Bad news:

(1) Easy to scratch

- The main disadvantage of acrylic aquariums is that they are easy to scratch. Any abrasive material in the aquarium, such as rocks or gravel/sand, can scratch the inside of the panel, while something as simple as a belt buckle or watch can also scratch the outside. I remember reading threads on forums to determine the type of aquarium I wanted and often found myself horrified by some of the stories about acrylic scratches. After owning a fish tank and servicing hundreds of fish tanks, I can confidently say that if you are careful and use the right tools, you will not scratch your fish tank. So it comes down to one thing – be careful. The good news is that most scratches can be smoothed out inside and outside the aquarium with a cheap scratch repair tool, or you can pay a professional company to repair them. Leyu Acrylic can give you basic maintenance instructions

(2) Expensive

- Acrylic is more expensive than glass - this is the price you pay for several of the advantages mentioned above. For those who have the funds to pay for acrylic, this may not be an issue, but for most people, cost is an important factor and is a serious consideration. Acrylic has better pressure resistance than glass. Acrylic generally has a higher tensile strength than glass, making it less likely to break when subjected to external pressure. Specifically, acrylic's pressure resistance depends on factors such as its thickness and quality, but generally speaking, acrylic with the same thickness can withstand pressure better than glass. Therefore, in situations where greater pressure is required, acrylic may be a better choice. However, it should be noted that acrylic may deform or be scratched when subjected to large impacts, so the specific use environment and needs need to be considered when selecting materials.

In conclusion

As we mentioned above, there are many considerations when choosing a glass or acrylic fish tank. If I had to summarize the above with a practical example, I would say: If I were building a sub-200-gallon freestanding aquarium for me (not built into a wall or cabinet), I would probably do it out of glass, like this Saves me money and can easily take it off the stand to deal with any issues. Now, if I had to set up the same size aquarium for a client I would probably recommend acrylic for simple reasons of liability. If I were building anything larger for me or for a client whether a freestanding build I would go with acrylic because In larger sizes the prices of glass and acrylic are much closer and the associated safety factors are getting more water volume which could lead to a bigger problem should it occur. Acrylic is safer than glass because even if it breaks, it won't produce sharp shards, reducing the risk of accidental injury.
